Get Wired | Crazy contraptions
INDIANAPOLIS – Get Wired celebrates some old-timey wackiness this week with bouncy balls, wind-up toys, strings, pulleys and buckets of sand… The Rube Goldberg Machine.
For those of you saying, “Huh? Wha…?” Rube Goldberg was a guy back in the early 20th century who not only was a cartoonist, writer and inventor, but also a creator of complicated mechanisms that performed the simplest of tasks.
There may be some of you that remember a quirky movie featuring quite a few of these Goldbergian machines.
Rube Goldberg was just plain amazing, if you ask me. Ingenuity and creativity are huge parts of what make up his drawings and inventions.
Why would you want it to take 457,896 steps to butter your toast, you might ask. There is no logical answer except to say: Why not?
The element of whimsy and pure wonderment in figuring out what might happen next is enough to draw anyone in.
